Q: How many Jewish students are there on campus?
A: There are approximately 1,000 Jewish students at Northeastern, about 8% of the undergraduate population.
Q: What kind of student programs and groups does Hillel sponsor at Northeastern?
A: The Executive Board and General Board meet weekly to create a variety of programs for the student community. Together with staff, they plan programs, events and holiday celebrations that reach the entire Northeastern Community. Students are encouraged to pursue their ideas, take the initiative, as well as get involved with existing projects and committees.
Q: How do students get involved with Hillel?
A: Any student on campus can participate in Hillel sponsored events. Getting involved is as easy as showing up to any event. Sign up through our website or come by to Hillel to fill out an interest form.
Q: Is there kosher dining on campus?
A: Northeastern offers kosher dinners catered by Rubin’s Kosher Catering. Monday through Thursday the dinner is served at Levine Marketplace in Stetson East Dining Hall. The meal is part of the meal plan and there is no additional cost. On Friday night, Shabbat dinner is served at Hillel. It is still part of the meal plan but it enables students to have a full Shabbat experience.
Q: What is Shabbat like at Northeastern?
A: Every week Northeastern offers student led services for Reform, Conservative, and Orthodox students (if there is a minyan). Every Friday night at 6:00pm we have candle lighting and then separate to the different services. After the service the community comes together for announcements and a short Israel update or d’var torah. Then we all do Kiddush and motzi followed by dinner. In the future we are planning to offer Saturday lunches and study sessions.
Q: What are holiday observances and celebrations like at Northeastern?
A: Northeastern Hillel runs a full program of services and meals for the High Holidays, Passover, and other festivals and holidays. During Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, services are held for the Northeastern community and tickets are available for dinners and lunches, plus pre-fast and break-fast dinners on Yom Kippur. During Passover, Hillel hosts a variety of Seders on the first and second nights. There are kosher for Passover meals served at Hillel throughout the week Other holidays are celebrated with programs, services, and dinners depending on where they fall during the academic calendar
Q: Can prospective students visit Northeastern and stay overnight with a Jewish student?
A. The best way to gain a sense of the Northeastern experience is to visit our scenic campus. The University Admissions Office can arrange for prospective students to tour the campus, observe classes, and eat in the dining halls. Contact Hillel if you are interested in staying overnight with a Jewish student or would like to stay for Shabbat. can also assist students with overnight stays. Q: How is Hillel connected to the University community?
A: Northeastern Hillel is a private not-for-profit organization and is the center for Jewish campus life at Northeastern. It is an affiliate agency of HYPERLINK "http://www.hillel.org/" Hillel International. Northeastern Hillel is integrated into the University community through its dynamic programs, co-sponsored events, and the involvement of active students in many other University groups. The University is very supportive of Hillel and its role on campus and works with Hillel to provide a welcoming atmosphere for Jewish students, faculty, and families.
